Aux EDCondemnation of Auxillia Mnangagwa’s Role in Zimbabwe's Repression

Auxillia Mnangagwa, the First Lady of Zimbabwe, has become a symbol of the brutal regime under her husband, President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Accusations of corruption, human rights abuses, and her alleged complicity in the country's collapse have triggered widespread condemnation. As such, her presence at international forums like the #FLAIR Summit must be questioned.

A regime that thrives on repression and exploitation has no place in global discourse on progress and human rights

Allegations of Human Rights Abuses

The First Lady’s role in Zimbabwe’s ongoing human rights violations cannot be ignored. The United States, in 2024, imposed sanctions on both Auxillia Mnangagwa and her husband, citing their involvement in corruption, abuse of power, and the systematic repression of opposition voices.

These sanctions underline the gravity of the situation, drawing attention to her role in perpetuating a regime responsible for abductions, arbitrary arrests, and widespread political violence.

Under the Mnangagwa administration, thousands of Zimbabweans have suffered from politically motivated kidnappings, torture, and detention. Critics allege that Auxillia Mnangagwa is part of the system that seeks to silence dissent through fear and intimidation. Her activities, whether directly or indirectly, contribute to a regime that has earned global censure for its ruthless tactics.

AuxiliaI speak today not out of convenience, but out of outrage.

Empowerment or Endorsement? Hosting Auxillia Mnangagwa at the FLAIR Summit Sends the Wrong Message to the people she’s representing. While Zimbabwean women suffer under her husband’s oppressive regime, honouring her isn’t empowerment — it’s complicity in our pain

  • Zimbabwe’s healthcare system is in a state of collapse.
  • Around 2,500 women die in childbirth every year due to a lack of basic medical resources. In January alone, nearly 300 newborns tragically died.
  • The Sally Mugabe Hospital, still relies on a single maternity theatre built in 1977, during Ian Smith’s regime.
  • Today, women are forced to give birth on filthy hospital floors, without proper care or equipment, while critical life-saving tools lie broken or completely absent.

Auxilla EDAuxillia Mnangagwa's Visit To The UK Is An Insult To The Zimbabwean Women And A Mockery To The Human Rights.

The planned visit of the 1st Lady, Auxillia Mnangagwa, to the UK, for the FLAIR Summit in London on the (17th-18th June), has triggered anger and deep concern among Zimbabweans in diaspora and back home. We are demanding that the UK government should refuse her entry. Whilst she parades around with the banner of women's empowerment. (DOES SHE EVEN KNOW THE MEANING OF IT?)

Women in Zimbabwe are suffering and so are the young girls. The country's health system has crumbled to nothing. Hospitals and clinics have no electricity, no medication and no staff. This has become a national norm.

Across the country girls as young as 10 years old are being raped, abused and forced into early motherhood. In many cases perpetrators walk free due to the broken justice system. The government turns a blind eye. Auxillia as a woman and a mother has failed to protect all the vulnerable children in our country, instead they allow the culture of silence.

As a result, primary school dropout rates have gone high, especially among girls. Many are forced out of education due to pregnancy, poverty or early marriages. These girls lose their future while those in power continue to enrich themselves and travel abroad for luxury.

WOZ say No to Auxilla

Mnangagwa WifeWomen of Zimbabwe (WoZ) expresses strong objection to Mrs Auxilia Mnangagwa’s participation at the FLAIR Summit being held in London from 17-18 June 2025. WoZ’s concern stems from Mrs Mnangagwa’s apparent indifference to the suffering of women in Zimbabwe, particularly in cases of women with different political views.

Mrs Mnangagwa has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of support for women’s rights and has failed to condemn or address the atrocities committed against women who are not aligned to the ruling party, Zanu PF or women who are human rights defenders and those who belong to different political opposition movements. This is not only a violation of basic human rights but also sends a dangerous message that such actions are acceptable. It is crucial that our community and events uphold and promote values that respect and protect all individuals, especially those who are vulnerable.

Since 2017, when her husband, ED Mnangagwa assumed the Presidency through a coup, many people including women were persecuted with some losing their lives. Mrs Mnangagwa’s Angel of Hope Foundation cites its ‘mission is to support the most vulnerable in society through providing access to healthcare, social services, education and economic empowerment initiatives with emphasis on women, youth and children’.

The foundation places emphasis on supporting women but it is surprising that women have been persecuted. Mrs Mnangagwa has never spoken out against the atrocities, visited the women and girls nor has she ever demanded answers in the case of MoreBlessing Ali who was abducted and murdered by known Zanu PF leaders in Nyatsime in May 2022. In August, 2018, six innocent Zimbabweans were killed by the Zimbabwe National Army following delays in announcing presidential results, she remained silent. In Jan 2019, following fuel riots, over fifty women came forward alleging sexual assaults and rape by the Army, she did not speak out. In August 2023, women from opposition political movement (CCC), reported being sexually assaulted and raped by the Zimbabwe Army and members of Zanu PF, but she did not question or seek to find the truth.

WOZMrs Mnangagwa’s participation at this summit sends a message that we are willing to overlook these serious issues for the sake of other considerations. This is not only morally wrong but also undermines the integrity of this event and the values it purports to represent. It is imperative that as Women of Zimbabwe we stand firm in our commitment to supporting and advocating for women’s rights and safety. Mrs Mnangagwa is a danger to women and to those she says she supports through her Angel of Hope Foundation.

The organisers of this event ought to reconsider their invitation to Mrs Mnangagwa. We urge Dr. Yvonne Thompson CBE DL, co-founder of FLAIR to think about the consequences of associating with wives of known dictators who disrespect human life and commit atrocities against their own citizens.

I believe that this will not only strengthen their event but also send a clear message that they stand against any form of injustice and support the rights and safety of all individuals.

AuxiliaStatement of Protest Against the Invitation of Auxillia Mnangagwa to the FLAIR Meeting in London

17th and 18th June 2025 Leonardo Royal Hotel, 45 Prescot Street, London, E1 8GP

As concerned Zimbabwean women in the diaspora, we strongly condemn the invitation of Auxillia Mnangagwa to the FLAIR Meeting in London. Her presence at an event meant to empower and uplift women is a direct insult to the suffering of countless women in Zimbabwe – suffering that she has consistently ignored, enabled, or turned a blind eye to.

Auxillia Mnangagwa, as the self-proclaimed "mother of the nation", has failed in her moral and civic duty to stand with women.

One glaring example is the inhumane treatment of Mary Chiwenga (Mubaiwa), the estranged wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. Mary was denied access to medical treatment abroad after her passport was confiscated by the state. Auxillia remained silent during Mary’s ordeal – an ordeal that ended in her losing a limb and being separated from her biological children.

How can someone who dines and smiles with Chiwenga, while ignoring the plight of the mother of his children, be held up as a beacon of women’s empowerment? Her silence was complicity. Her indifference was violence.

As Petty Ziramba, a Zimbabwean woman living in the UK, I am disgusted.

I feel betrayed that a platform that should amplify authentic female voices has instead chosen to celebrate someone who has failed the very women she claims to represent.

FLAIR stands for First Ladies of Africa Impact & Resilience – qualities that Auxillia Mnangagwa has clearly not embodied in her public conduct. We call on the organisers of the FLAIR Meeting to reconsider this invitation. Zimbabwean women deserve true representation – not photo opportunities or performative leadership.
